A cut-your-own 1 m x 1 m (39 x 39 in) mass loaded vinyl sheet that stops airborne sound through walls, doors, floors and ceilings.

Noise has one big enemy: mass. Thin walls and hollow doors do not have enough of it, so you hear the neighbor's TV, the freeway or the washing machine. This sheet adds 2 lb/sq ft (9.8 kg/m²) of dense vinyl to the surface. Each sheet covers about 10.8 sq ft (1 m²), so you can plan coverage with simple math.

Do not skip the seams. Sound leaks through gaps. Butt the sheets tight and tape every seam, then seal the edges where the vinyl meets the ceiling, floor and corners.
It is heavy. Each sheet weighs about 22 lb (9.8 kg). Get a second pair of hands for walls and ceilings, and use screws or construction adhesive, not tape alone.

Building or renovating?

If the wall is open, put the vinyl over the studs and insulation, then cover it with drywall. Butt the sheets tight, tape the seams and seal the edges before the drywall goes on.

For heavy bass, this layering is the setup to use: vinyl behind the drywall, with an air gap where you can.

How much do I need?

Each sheet covers about 10.8 sq ft (1 m²). Measure the area you want to treat, cover it fully and seal the seams. Partial coverage leaves gaps for sound to leak through. Buy a little extra for cuts around outlets and corners.

Honest note: mass blocks mid and high frequencies well. Deep bass is the hardest noise to stop. For heavy bass, layer MLV behind drywall with an air gap, and seal the gaps around doors and windows.

Do I need a contractor to install this?+
No. Most customers install it themselves with scissors or a utility knife and double-sided tape. Cut it to size with a straight edge.
Will it block my neighbor's bass or subwoofer?+
It reduces it, but bass is the hardest noise to block. For heavy bass, layer MLV behind drywall with an air gap. Mid and high frequencies, such as voices and TV, drop the most.
Is 2 lb/sq ft heavy enough for a shared apartment wall?+
It is a solid weight for a first layer. Cover the whole area, tape every seam and seal the edges. Thin shared walls may still need extra layers or drywall over the vinyl.
Which thickness should I choose?+
Both are 2 lb/sq ft mass loaded vinyl. The 2 mm (0.08 in) option is thicker and heavier-duty. The 1.2 mm (0.05 in) option is thinner and easier to fold around corners.
Is it safe for bedrooms and nurseries?+
It is a non-toxic, low-emission vinyl made for bedrooms and nurseries.
Can I paint it or cover it?+
Yes. Most customers cover it with fabric, drywall or acoustic panels for a finished look.
Will it stick to a brick wall?+
Use construction adhesive on brick or concrete. Double-sided tape is for drywall, doors and metal.
How many sheets cover one wall?+
An 8 x 10 ft (2.4 x 3 m) wall is about 80 sq ft (7.4 m²), so plan on 8 sheets, plus a little extra for cuts.
Is it waterproof?+
The vinyl is water resistant, so it works in basements, garages, vehicles and laundry rooms. Avoid standing water on the seams.

1. Airborne Noise

  • This travels through the air, like conversations, TV sounds, or barking dogs. When sound waves hit a building, they cause it to vibrate, transmitting through the structure.

2. Impact Noise

  • This results from physical impacts on buildings, such as footsteps, slamming doors, or moving furniture. Impact noise can be harder to isolate, as these vibrations are stronger and travel further through dense materials.

Decibels are measured logarithmically (not as a percentage) . This means that every increase of 10dB on the scale is a tenfold increase in sound pressure level (SPL) . Near silence is 0dB 🤫, while a sound at 10dB is ten times louder!
